Capstone project: Make Python Introduce Itself

This is the final project in your opening chapter. You will begin with an empty editor and write the complete program yourself.

The empty space is intentional. You already know enough to fill it.

What your program will do

Your program will make Python introduce itself in four lines.

LineRequirement
1Print exactly Hello! I am Python.
2Print exactly I follow instructions from top to bottom.
3Write your own sentence beginning with I can
4Print exactly Let's keep learning!

The third line is yours. Choose something Python might help someone do. For example:

I can help you solve puzzles.

You can use that example or invent a different one.

Plan before you type

A useful programmer’s habit is to separate the result you want from the code that produces it.

First, picture the four output lines. Then turn each line into its own print() instruction.

Here is one way to work:

  1. Write the first print instruction.

  2. Press Run and check its output.

  3. Add the second instruction and run again.

  4. Add your own third line.

  5. Add the final instruction.

  6. Read the complete output from top to bottom.

Running after each small change makes errors easier to locate. If the program worked with two lines but failed after you added the third, you know where to begin looking.

Your final check

Before pressing Submit, check the following:

  • There are four print instructions.

  • Each instruction is on its own line.

  • print is lowercase every time.

  • Every text has two quotation marks.

  • Every print instruction has two parentheses.

  • The output contains exactly four non-empty lines.

  • Your third output line begins with I can and continues with your own idea.

Use Monty as a reviewer

Monty can review the program without taking it away from you. Before you submit, try asking:

Compare my four-line program with the requirements. Point out one issue at a time, explain why it matters, and let me make each correction.

You have had full access to Monty for free throughout this opening chapter. In later chapters, Monty’s hints, code reviews, and alternative explanations are available with a Guided subscription.

Hint

Monty uses AI models whenever you ask for help, and those requests have an ongoing cost. Guided supports that ongoing help. You can also keep learning independently for free: every course and lesson remains available, including the exercises and quizzes.

Finish the chapter

Once your program passes, pause for a moment before moving on. You started this chapter without needing any programming experience. You can now write instructions, run a program, inspect its output, and repair a mistake.

This project is small, but the working is real. Plan, write, run, inspect, and improve. You will use that same cycle for much larger programs.

Task

Write a four-line program from the empty editor.

Your output must follow these requirements:

  1. Hello! I am Python.

  2. I follow instructions from top to bottom.

  3. Your own sentence beginning with I can

  4. Let's keep learning!

Run the program as you build it. When the output contains exactly four lines, press Submit.
